What to Expect From Your First Fitness Photoshoot

If you've never done a fitness photoshoot before, the idea can feel equal parts exciting and terrifying. What do you wear? How do you look your best on the day? What actually happens?

In this post I'm going to walk you through exactly what to expect from your first fitness photoshoot, so you can walk in confident, relaxed and ready to show off the physique you've worked so hard to build.

I've attended photoshoots with clients across the UK and Europe, and I can tell you from experience, the men who prepare properly always walk away with photos they're genuinely proud of.

Why Do a Fitness Photoshoot?

Before we get into the logistics, let's talk about why a photoshoot is worth doing in the first place.

A fitness photoshoot gives you a fixed, visual goal to work towards. It's not abstract like "get fit" or vague like "lose some weight." It's a date in the diary, a camera in your face and a permanent record of what you achieved.

In my experience, men who book a photoshoot as part of their coaching journey:

  • Train harder and more consistently

  • Stick to their nutrition plan even when motivation dips

  • Achieve better results in less time

  • Walk away with a level of confidence they've never experienced before

The photoshoot isn't just about the photos. It's about proving to yourself what you're capable of.

How to Prepare in the Final Week

The week before your shoot is crucial. Here's exactly what to do:

Days 7-4 before the shoot:

  • Continue training normally, don't suddenly change anything

  • Keep hitting your protein target

  • Increase your daily steps to 10,000+

  • Avoid alcohol completely

Days 3-2 before the shoot:

  • Start a moderate carb load, increase your carbohydrate intake slightly to fill out your muscles

  • Reduce sodium intake to minimise water retention

  • Stay well hydrated, aim for 3-4 litres of water per day

  • Get 8 hours of sleep

The day before:

  • Keep food clean and simple

  • Avoid anything that causes bloating, carbonated drinks, beans, cruciferous vegetables

  • Do a light pump workout to keep the muscles full

  • Get to bed early

Shoot Day: What to Expect

On the morning of your shoot:

  • Eat a moderate meal 2-3 hours before, carbohydrates and protein, nothing too heavy

  • Do a 20-30 minute pump workout before your first shot, this drives blood into the muscles and gives you that full, defined look on camera

  • Stay hydrated but don't overdrink in the hour before shooting

  • Bring snacks to keep energy levels up between shots

When you arrive at the studio or location, your photographer will guide you through the shots. Don't worry if you feel awkward at first, every man does. Within the first 10-15 minutes you'll relax into it and the photos will start coming naturally.

What to Wear

For physique shoots, less is more. The goal is to show the physique you've worked for, not hide it.

  • Board shorts or fitted gym shorts work well for most men

  • Dark colours are generally more flattering on camera

  • Bring 2-3 outfit options so you have variety in the final shots

  • Avoid baggy clothing — it hides the definition you've worked for

Posing Tips for First Timers

You don't need to be a professional model to look great in your photos. A few simple tips:

  • Stand tall — good posture immediately makes you look bigger and more confident

  • Twist slightly at the torso — a straight-on shot is rarely the most flattering angle

  • Flex everything — even muscles that aren't the focus of the shot

  • Breathe out before the shot is taken to tighten the midsection

  • Look slightly above the camera for a more powerful, confident expression

After the Shoot

Most photographers will deliver your edited photos within 1-2 weeks. When they land in your inbox, you'll understand why men come back to do this again and again.

The photos are proof. Proof of what you committed to, what you sacrificed and what you achieved. For most men, it's one of the proudest moments of their fitness journey.
